The Crocus Project

October 25th, 2013

Today, we planted our crocuses as part of The Crocus Project.

  • The Crocus Project is a tangible way to introduce young people to the subject of the Holocaust and to raise awareness about the dangers of discrimination, prejudice and intolerance.
  • The Holocaust Educational Trust of Ireland provided our school and many other schools with yellow crocus bulbs which we  plant in autumn in memory of one and a half million Jewish children and thousands of other children who died in the Holocaust.
  • The yellow flowers recall the yellow Stars of David that all Jews were forced to wear under Nazi rule. The Crocus blooms at the end of January or beginning of February, around the time of international Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January).
  • When people admire the flowers, the children can explain what they
    represent.
